Scientific knowledge is fundamental to support the work of the Convention and its Subsidiary Bodies. The importance of science is recognized throughout the text of the Convention, and Parties and observers are called on to take actions to improve our collective understanding of biodiversity including options for action, to share relevant information and to cooperate in this respect. Science also provides the foundation for robust systems for monitoring the components of biodiversity, an issue also recognized in the text of the Convention.
